In the 50-plus years since Tulane left the SEC, athletic success has been practically few and far between.
When I was in grade school, Tulane basketball reached the NCAA tournament three times in four years.
There was also the 1998 season in which Tulane football season finished unbeaten, which resulted in a victory over BYU in the Liberty Bowl.
And of course, the two trips to Omaha in the early 2000’s with baseball.
Until a couple of years ago, Tulane football had never gone to a bowl game three years in a row, much less win back-to-back ones like they did in 2018 and 2019.
Now they’re bowl eligible for the fourth time in five seasons, which of course has never happened in school history. In fact, prior to the three straight bowl games the Green Wave played in from 2018 to 2020, the only other time Tulane ever made back to back bowl games was 1979-80, with neither appearance resulting in a victory.
But nothing compares to what is easily one of the biggest games in Tulane football history.
On Friday morning, Tulane will be squaring off against Cincinnati, the Group of Five darlings of last year, for a chance to host the AAC title game on December 3rd.
That’s right, Yulman Stadium could be the host of the AAC Championship Game.
Regardless of what happens, Tulane fans, enjoy the ride.
You deserve this moment.
